MedStaff Locum Tenens
CRNA staffing for hospitals, surgery centers, and anesthesia groups
Locum CRNAs for vacancy, leave, OB, and surge coverage. One all-inclusive rate on a written Work Order, the credentialing file in your medical staff office within five business days, $1M/$3M malpractice included, and one coordinator who answers the phone for the whole assignment.
No retainer and no fee until a Work Order is accepted by both sides. You are never billed for time a CRNA did not work.
When anesthesia departments call us
Locum CRNA coverage for every gap in the schedule
A closed room costs cases every day it stays closed. A locum CRNA keeps the schedule running while you decide whether the need is temporary or a permanent hire.
Vacancy coverage
Keep rooms open and cases on the schedule while a permanent CRNA search runs. Our permanent practice can run that search in parallel, so the locum and the hire move together.
Leave coverage
Parental, medical, and sabbatical leave, with the CRNA credentialed and privileged before the leave begins.
Surgery center blocks and new rooms
Added block time, a new room, or a new service line before the permanent staffing plan catches up.
OB and call coverage
Labor epidural and cesarean coverage, nights, weekends, and holiday call, stated on the Work Order with the call rate.
Rural and CRNA-only departments
Critical access and rural hospitals where the CRNA is the anesthesia department, for weeks or months at a time, with travel and lodging arranged.
Backlog and surge
Clearing a case backlog, covering a census spike, or staffing a seasonal volume swing without adding permanent headcount.
Practice model
Locum CRNAs matched to how your department runs
A CRNA who thrives on a 1:4 care team and a CRNA who covers a rural hospital alone are different people. We settle the model when we define the coverage and present only CRNAs who have recently worked it.
27 states have opted out of Medicare's physician-supervision requirement for CRNAs. Our CRNA recruiting page lists them with the year each took effect.
Medically directed care team
Locum CRNAs working concurrent rooms under your anesthesiologists, up to four at a time under Medicare’s medical-direction rules. We match CRNAs who are comfortable with your ratio and your division of work.
CRNA-only coverage
Locum CRNAs who are the anesthesia provider for the case, supervised by the operating practitioner where the federal requirement applies, or practicing as state law and your bylaws allow in an opt-out state. We present only CRNAs with recent independent practice for these assignments.
Mixed and on-call coverage
Day rooms plus OB, nights, or weekends. Call hours are billed at the call rate on the Work Order and never count toward guaranteed hours.
What the agreement guarantees
The terms, before you sign anything
These are the standard MedStaff Locum Tenens client terms. Every assignment confirms its own rate, dates, and hours on its Work Order. The full agreement is summarized on our locum tenens staffing page.
One all-inclusive bill rate
The CRNA’s pay, our fee, and malpractice coverage are inside the hourly rate on the Work Order. Premium and call rates apply only where the Work Order says so. Travel and lodging are arranged by us unless the Work Order makes them reimbursable.
Credentialing file in five business days
A complete, primary-source verified file to your medical staff office within five business days of the CRNA accepting the assignment, with thirty days for privileging.
$1M / $3M malpractice before the first case
Occurrence coverage at $1 million per claim and $3 million aggregate, with the certificate of insurance delivered before the start date.
You are never billed for time not worked
A CRNA who withdraws, no-shows, or is removed is replaced from the original need, and you are billed only for worked and guaranteed hours.
Cancellation by notice period, in writing
More than thirty days out, no charge. Fifteen to thirty days, one week of guaranteed hours. Under fifteen days, two weeks plus non-recoverable travel.
Conversion written into the agreement
If a locum CRNA becomes your permanent hire, a conversion fee applies during the eighteen months after the assignment, reduced pro rata by the hours already worked for you and reaching zero at 2,080 hours.
From need to first case
How a CRNA assignment starts
Every CRNA we present has been verified against the list below before you see a profile, so your medical staff office is reviewing a file, not chasing documents.
- RN and advanced practice licensure in the state of the assignment, with status and any actions
- NBCRNA certification and continued professional certification status
- DEA and state controlled-substance registration where the role requires them
- BLS and ACLS, plus PALS for pediatric cases
- Recent case mix: cardiac, pediatric, OB, regional, and trauma volume where your rooms need it
- National Practitioner Data Bank query, OIG and SAM exclusion checks, and a criminal background check
- Work history with gaps explained
- Peer references from anesthesiologists, chief CRNAs, or surgeons
- Certificate of insurance for the assignment
Define the coverage
Dates, rooms or shifts, case mix, practice model, call, OB, EMR, and anesthesia workstation, captured in one call with your coordinator. Send the schedule and we draft it from that.
Review two or three CRNAs
Profile cards for credentialed CRNAs whose licensure, case mix, and availability match. Interview if you want to, then choose.
Sign the Work Order
A written rate confirmation with the bill rate, guaranteed hours, call and premium rates, travel and lodging terms, and dates, accepted electronically by both sides.
Credentialing file in five business days
Primary-source verified licensure, certification, background, work history, references, and the certificate of insurance, delivered to your medical staff office.
Approve hours, receive one invoice
The CRNA submits hours weekly, you approve them, and approved weeks roll into one bi-weekly or monthly invoice on net 30 terms.
Locum or permanent
When a locum CRNA is the answer, and when it is a bridge
A leave, a seasonal swing, or a new room you are not sure will last: locum coverage is the right tool, and it ends when the need does. A vacancy you expect to fill for good is different. Every week of locum coverage on a permanent need is a week of bill rate that a permanent hire would have replaced.
Most departments with a permanent vacancy do both: a locum CRNA keeps the rooms open, and our permanent CRNA recruiters run the search on contingency, with a 27-day average time-to-fill across permanent clinical searches. If the locum turns out to be the hire, the conversion terms are already in the agreement.
Questions to ask any CRNA staffing agency
- Is the bill rate all-inclusive, or are malpractice, travel, and fees added on the invoice?
- How many business days until the credentialing file is in our medical staff office, in writing?
- Has the CRNA recently worked our practice model and our case mix?
- How are call and OB hours billed, and do they count toward guaranteed hours?
- What happens, and what are we charged, if the CRNA leaves early?
- What are the conversion terms if we want to hire the CRNA?

FAQ
CRNA staffing, answered
- What is a CRNA staffing agency?
- A CRNA staffing agency places a credentialed certified registered nurse anesthetist at your facility for a defined period to cover a vacancy, a leave, or a surge in cases. The CRNA is the agency’s independent contractor, not your employee. MedStaff Locum Tenens sources the CRNA, verifies every credential, carries the malpractice coverage, arranges travel and lodging, and runs scheduling, timesheets, and invoicing for the assignment.
- How does locum CRNA pricing work?
- One all-inclusive hourly bill rate, stated on a written Work Order before the CRNA starts, along with guaranteed hours, call and premium rates, and travel and lodging terms. The rate covers the CRNA’s pay, our fee, and malpractice coverage. It rises with call, nights, cardiac or pediatric case mix, short notice, and rural travel. There is no retainer and no fee until a Work Order is accepted by both sides.
- How fast can a locum CRNA start?
- Your privileging timeline decides it. The credentialing file is in your medical staff office within five business days of the CRNA accepting the Work Order, and the agreement allows thirty days for privileging. Facilities with a temporary privileges process often start a CRNA within two weeks. For a planned leave, tell us the dates early and the CRNA is privileged before it begins.
- Is malpractice coverage included for locum CRNAs?
- Yes. Every CRNA placed by MedStaff Locum Tenens is covered at $1 million per occurrence and $3 million aggregate for the assignment, with the certificate of insurance delivered before the first case.
- Can you staff CRNA-only departments and opt-out states?
- Yes. For CRNA-only and rural assignments we present only CRNAs with recent independent practice. 27 states have opted out of Medicare’s physician-supervision requirement for CRNAs; in the others, the operating practitioner or an anesthesiologist supervises. State law and your bylaws apply everywhere, and we confirm them when we define the coverage.
- Do you cover OB, call, nights, and weekends?
- Yes. Call and premium shifts are written into the Work Order with their own rates. Call hours are billed at the call rate and never count toward guaranteed hours.
- Can a locum CRNA become our permanent hire?
- Yes. Conversion is written into the client agreement: a conversion fee applies during the eighteen months after an assignment, reduced pro rata by the hours the CRNA has already worked for you and reaching zero at 2,080 hours. Our permanent CRNA recruiting practice can also run a search in parallel.
- What if we need to cancel or shorten a CRNA assignment?
- Cancellation is by notice period and is set out in the agreement before you sign a Work Order: more than thirty days out, no charge; fifteen to thirty days, one week of guaranteed hours; under fifteen days, two weeks plus non-recoverable travel. A CRNA who is not working out can be removed on seven days’ notice, or immediately for a clinical or safety concern.
- Is there a cost to request coverage or review CRNAs?
- No. Defining the coverage, reviewing CRNA profiles, and interviewing cost nothing. Fees begin only when a Work Order is accepted by both sides.
